Armpit sweating operation

Sweating in human beings is quite normal and it is healthy for the body, since the main objective of sweating is to control the body temperature. The hypothalamus part of the brain is the main controller of temperature in the body. The sympathetic nervous system in the body is directed by the hypothalamus to order the sweat glands to produce sweat so that the water can cool of the body and keep the temperature under control. The sweating attracts the attention only then when one is constantly sweating and the body gets wet and the sweat stains start surfacing on the clothes. The condition of excessive sweating is also called as the hyperhidrosis in which the individual sweats unnecessarily and without any triggering. The excessive sweating is found in the palms of the hands, feet, and face. Sweating in patients' armpits with hyperhidrosis creates a particularly sticky problem and also leaves them to find instant cure for the sweating problem. The usual treatment for underarm sweating is to use antiperspirant and deodorants which help to dry out the skin but the use of these treatments cannot cure the problem it only temporarily relieves the individual of the sticky situation. The excessive sweating if it persists even after the repeated use of antiperspirants then surgery may be considered for the excessive sweating condition.

Treatment

Physicians treat the excessive sweating condition in two ways. One is to prescribe the patient with the Botulinum toxin injections, the chemical is a highly poisonous substance but it is given in a very small quantity. Botulinum toxin works by inactivating the nerves that trigger sweat-gland activity.  The doctor can also do a sympathectomy operation in which the sympathetic nerves that control sweating are destroyed by cutting them or by burning them down. These nerves are situated in the cavity of the chest. The surgery is also referred as the keyhole surgery.

Surgery is the last option in treating the hyperhidrosis disorder, and it needs a general anesthetic. The surgeon in this surgery makes an incision in the chest and through that cuts the nerves or burns them by using electrical current. In this surgery the patient has to have a rest of about one to two weeks and the success rate of this surgery is about eighty percent. But the drawback of this operation is that the body experiences a thermoregulatory dysfunction and the patient may sweat in the abdominal area of his body.
